Invention and Patent Battles

March 27 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join us for a deep-dive discussion around innovation, invention, patents, and the impact of innovation on society.

This program is part of a broader BU-wide commemoration that marks the 150th anniversary of Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone patent and the transformation of human communication it helped catalyze. We approach this milestone as an honest commemoration: a recognition that breakthrough innovation and complicated legacies can sit in the same history, and that confronting that tension is part of what it means to innovate responsibly.

This panel includes experts in intellectual property, legal history, and innovation policy. This panel will be moderated by Megan MacGarvie, Associate Professor in Markets, Public Policy, and Law. Opening remarks will be made by the Questrom School of Business Dean, Susan Fournier.

Panelists:

  • John Duffy, Professor of Law & Director, Center on Intellectual Property Law, University of Virginia
  • Christopher Beauchamp, Ph.D., Professor of Law, Brooklyn Law School and Author of Invented by Law: Alexander Graham Bell and the Patent That Changed America
  • Adam Jaffe, Professor Emeritus at Brandeis University; Research Associate, National Bureau of Economic Research, Senior Research Associate at Motu Economic and Public Policy Research
